Innocent Drinks Big Knit Campaign

Last week I stumbled across a post on Facebook by Innocent Drinks launching their Big Knit campaign for 2013.  I do occasionally buy Innocent products (Charlie is a huge fan of their smoothies especially) but I have to admit I had never heard of this campaign before, even though it has now been running for 10 years.

The concept is simple. People like you and me knit little hats and send them to Innocent, Innocent then put them on 250,000 of their little individual bottles and they are sent to stores across the country to be sold.  25p of each hatted bottle that is sold goes to Age UK.  Awesome right?!

So, where does the money go once it is given to Age UK?

"Your hats will fund a range of winter initiatives including home visits, befriending and lunch clubs giving older people new skills to cope in the cold weather.
Together we can reach hundreds of thousands of older people through Age UK's 'spread the warmth' campaign this winter, helping those who desperately need our support to stay warm and keep in touch with others."

An interesting fact is that 80% of the hats that Innocent receive are actually made by the people that benefit from Age UK's services.  Now, I know knitting is perceived generally as an older persons hobby, however I know that lots of younger people (like me) can knit we must get involved.  The little hats are really easy to make, as long as you can do both a basic and a purl stitch you can make one and it only takes about an hour from start to finish.  There are patterns on the Innocent website so please pop through and take a look and if you can knit please please pick up your needles and give this a go....and if you can't there's a great tutorial here ;-)

As for me...I'm 2 hats down so far but i'm aiming for 20 by October.

So what do you reckon? Worth a little bit of time and effort to help someone who really needs it this winter?

Yes....I thought so too.
